biennale pick#4: Other by Tracey Moffatt

Other by Tracey Moffatt is a compilation of scenes from popular Hollywood blockbusters. Selected scenes depict non-White communities include Middle Eastern, tribes, ethnic groups, Asians, Africans, Amazonians and Blacks. They are in contrast to the heroic Whites who not only different in physical forms and color but also role in the scenes.

The Whites are often portrayed as heroes, colonials, visitors and people who are on the upper bound of power and knowledge. This results in the others as weak, dependent, savage and uncivilized. As the film goes on, interaction starts to occur, varying from wars, fights, conflicts, acknowledgement, gaze, handshakes even love making.
