A typical family structure and relationship? Heh. Beat that. Sean Lee in his latest solo show, Homework ( 1-25 June 2011 at the Objectifs, Singapore), presented a series of family photographs. No, not those everybody-in-two-rows or wedding kind-of photographs.
A playful approach to the subject, Lee breaks through the boundary of a typical or an expected form of family relationship where respect and seriousness is prioritized. On the contrary, the relationship among the family members are quite different, more informal and approachable. The photographer also plays the role of both being and outside the environment, making him an exclusive subject, a performer instead.
The photographs are also accompanied with texts like diary. This emphasizes the personal approach of the photographer. The works seem to be specially dedicated for his family.
Sean Lee is a young photographer who have presented works worldwide. His previous works titled Shauna depicts a struggle of gender identity as Sean took a performer role of both a girl and boy.
